The Buffalo Sabres opened the season earlier tonight at home versus the Montreal Canadiens. The Sabres won 2 – 1 in the shoot out. Thomas Vanek scored in regulation and Kotalik and Stafford scored in the shoot out.

- The Sabres win was the result of a stellar defensive effort and great goaltending.
- Connolly is a last minute scratch. WTF? The Sabres need to be be stronger in the middle.
