SabreCast #24: Flyers and Islanders

In SabreCast #24, we cover Friday’s 3-0 loss to the Philadephia Flyers and Saturday’s 4-2 loss to the New York Islanders. The Sabres played well against both opponents, but still blew two back to back home games. We discuss the games and attempt to figure out what is wrong with the Sabres.

Lindy Ruff shook up the lines for both games by sitting Henrik Tallinder and Max Afinogenov. In their places played Nathan Paetsch and Mark Mancari, who was recalled from Portland. Both guys played well, but didn’t add enough to break the Sabres slump.

Sabres vs Philadelphia Flyers

  • MIller got back in the lineup after a rough game against Boston on Wednesday and played quite well, allowing only two goals.
  • Despite playing a sound game and getting tons of chances, the Sabres could not cash in on their opportunities including a couple two-man advantages.
  • The Sabres took 40 shots, but were held scoreless. That made the loss even more frustrating, because the Sabres’ play was much improved over the game against Boston.

Predictions

  • Matt’s Prediction: 5-1 L (Pominville, MacArthur, Mancari)
  • Mike’s Prediction: 4-3 W (Vanek, Stafford, Mancari)

Sabres vs New York Islanders

  • Lalime got the start and a chance to redeem himself after his last start against Columbus. He played very well and only allowed three goals, a couple of which were very fluky.
  • Mancari got his first NHL goal in the first period to tie up the game. He has been a bright spot on the team and has been getting a lot of quality playing time.
  • Despite outshooting the Isles 18-2 in the second period, they were outscored 1-0. That pretty much spelled disaster for the Sabres.
  • The Sabres came out of the second intermission very flat and allowed an early goal, going down 3-1. Roy scored later in the period, but the Sabres couldn’t find a way to tie up the game.
