Sabres Assign Eight to Portland

Friday, October 3rd, 2008 10:09 pm by Mike

WGR 550 reported today that eight more players on the Sabres training camp roster have been assigned to Portland. Those sent down include:

  • Nathan Gerbe
  • Tim Kennedy
  • Chris Butler
  • MikeĀ Funk
  • Dylan Hunter
  • Mark Mancari (pending waivers)
  • Mathieau Darche (pending waivers)
  • Marek Zagrapan

Notably, the Sabres have retained prospects Patrick Kaleta, Andre Sekera, and Mike Weber. Rumors suggest that Sekera is a lock to make the team, but that Weber will be sent down after the next game. Numminen and Paetsch are rumored to be fighting for the final defensive spot.

It appears that the Sabres will also be dressing Matt Ellis in their final preseason game on Sunday versus the Detroit Red Wings. Last season Ellis had 8 points in 54 games split between the Red Wings and the Los Angeles Kings.

WGR also reports that Stafford and Connolly missed practice today. Connolly has been sitting out from practice with a sore back, while Stafford was injured during a fight in the last preseason game versus the Columbus Blue Jackets. Gaustad will miss the next few weeks as he recovers from thumb surgery.

It will be interesting to see how the battered offensive lineup holds up against the Red Wings on Sunday. With hope, the Sabres will get Stafford and/or Connolly back for the start of the regular season and take Peters out of the lineup.
